Splenic artery aneurysms

– only aneurysms that are more common in women – 4:1 female:male ratio

– occur secondary to systemic arterial fibrodysplasia / portal hypertension / increased splenic AV shunting that occurs in pregnancy

– symptoms – LUQ pain radiating to shoulder or subscapular area; majority asymptomatic

2% result in life-threatening haemorrhage secondary to rupture

95% of ruptures occur in young pregnant women – when it occurs, mortality is 70%

Diagnosis: USS or CT angiogram

Treatment: surgical intervention or CT or fluoroscopy-guided embolization
