The daily educational pearl – ketamine induced cystitis

Ketamine induced cystitis

= inflammation, fibrosis, decreased compliance of the bladder, papillary necrosis; if extensive scarring occurs, it can cause hydronephrosis and renal failure

– due to ketamine and its metabolites that are concentrated in urine

Symptoms are similar to interstitial cystitis: frequency / urgency / dysuria / incontinence / suprapubic pain / haematuria

It occurs in chronic ketamine users / abusers; the dose at which is occurs is not clear.

Treatment is symptomatic.
