Kussmaul sign

= paradoxical raise in jugular venous pressure on inspiration

It indicates limited right ventricular filling due to:

- pericardial tamponade

- right heart failure (e.g. massive pulmonary embolus)

- right ventricular acute ischaemia

- constrictive pericarditis

- tricuspid stenosis / tricuspid regurgitation
