Monteggia fracture dislocation was first described in 1814 by Giovanni Battista Monteggia, 81 years before Roentgen described use of Xrays for medical purposes in a paper in 1895.

Giovanni Battista Monteggia was an Italian physician, pathologist and surgeon. He died of syphilis, acquired by cutting himself during an autopsy.
