50 year old lady presented with fever and diarrhoea after returning from overseas trip. Her venous blood gas showed the following:

PH = 7.02

pCO2 = 36 mmHg

pO2 = 25 mmHg

HCO3 = 9 mmol/L

Na = 143 mmol/L

K = 3.6 mmol/L

Cl = 104 mmol/L

Hb = 110 g/L

Glucose = 2.4 mmol/L

Lactate = 27 mmol/L

Creatinine = 133 umol/L

  1.  Interpret these results
  2. What are the causes of high lactate, in general and what is the cause for this patient?
