Kussmaul sign

= paradoxical raise in jugular venous pressure on inspiration

It indicates limited right ventricular filling due to:

– pericardial tamponade

– right heart failure (e.g. massive pulmonary embolus)

– right ventricular acute ischaemia

– constrictive pericarditis

– tricuspid stenosis / tricuspid regurgitation
