The abdominal x-ray shows a thumb-printing sign, as seen below, which is indicative of mucosal oedema of the large bowel due to colitis from a variety of conditions (e.g. ulcerative colitis, pseudomembranous colitis, and ischaemic colitis).

This particular patient, however, was suffering from an infective colitis.
