Imaging Case of the Week 543 Answer

The elbow x-ray shows

Small irregular densities suggestive of avulsion fractures posterior to the elbow associated with soft tissue swelling. Clinically, the patient was unable to extend their elbow. Subsequent advanced imaging confirmed a complete rupture of the triceps tendon.

THP – think of triceps avulsion fracture if irregular densities are seen behind the elbow post trauma. Test for functional deficit in terms of loss of elbow extension.
