Lab Case 300

A 10 year old male is brought to ED with a 2 week history of a cough. He was prescribed antibiotics by the GP 5 days ago. Over the last 3 days the child has developed a petechial rash and had frequent nose bleeds. Below is the childs FBC:

Hb 82 g/L (112-145)                                 WCC 3.4 x 10^9/L (4-12.5)

MCH  342 g/L (320-360)                          Neutrophils 0.4 x 10^9/L (1.3-7.3)

MCV 86 fl (76-90)                                     Lymphocytes 2.9 X10^9 (1.5 -5.5)

Platelets 9 x 10^9/L (150-480)

  1. Describe and interpret the FBC result
  2. What clinical signs and investigations would help determine the cause of these findings?
