70 year old lady presented with fever and rigor for 2 days. Her blood venous gases showed the following:

PH = 7.457

pCO2 = 27 mmHg

pO2 = 51 mmHg

HCO3 = 19 mmol/L

Hb = 134 g/L

Na = 130 mmol/L

K = 4.6 mmol/L

Cl = 99 mmol/L

Glucose = 8.1 mmol/L

Lactate = 2.7 mmol/L

Creatinine = 142 mmol/L

Questions:

  • Interpret these results
  • Does the presence of rigor indicate serious bacterial infection?
