An alcoholic man presented to the emergency department after suffering from a seizure. His venous blood gases showed the following:

PH = 7.56

pCO2 = 42 mmHg

pO2 = 17 mmHg

HCO3 = 38.4 mmol/L

Na = 134 mmol/L

K = 2.5 mmol/L

Cl = 86 mmol/L

Hb = 131 g/L

Glucose = 4.6 mmol/L

Lactate = 3.0 mmol/L

Creatinine = 52 umol/L
