SMART syndrome = stroke-like migraine attacks after radiation therapy
– uncommon complication of cerebral radiation therapy
– patients usually present years after radiation therapy with prolonged stroke-like episodes, headache and occasionally seizures; these episodes are often preceded by a migraine-like aura
It is a self-limiting condition, and gradually resolves over the course of several weeks.
When diagnosis is suspected, patients should have an MRI of the brain, which will show prominent and transient gyral enhancement.
